Carpenter Ants
Identification
Carpenter ants are large ants (6–13 mm) ranging from black to red-and-black. They excavate wood to build nests, often leaving behind sawdust-like frass. They may be seen trailing along walls, ceilings, or exterior siding.
Behaviour
Carpenter ants don’t eat wood — they hollow it out. They prefer moist or softened wood, making water-damaged areas especially vulnerable. They forage for food at night and can have multiple satellite nests inside structures.
Prevention
Repair moisture issues, keep trees and shrubs trimmed away from the home, and remove decaying wood around the property. Store firewood away from structures.
Control & Intervention
Effective control requires locating and treating both parent and satellite nests. All City technicians use a combination of baiting, dusting, and targeted treatments to eliminate hidden colonies and stop structural damage.
